Hi, I'm Geert!

Home is Amsterdam, NL.

For ages I've loved making music, recording sounds, having genuine conversations, and telling stories. Since 2021, I've been making audio documentaries for broadcasters and, occasionally, branded projects. I'm used to doing everything from A to Z - even making my own music - but I'm also happy to partner with others or simply be a cog in the machine.

I mostly work in Dutch, but a while back I realized the world is too big for only Dutch stories. The characters I've come across around the world give me inspiration and energy, and since most of the shows I love are in English, I thought: why not give it a try?

It turned out to be a good idea. My first international piece won the HearSay Heard Award (Ireland) in 2026, and in October '26 I'll make my debut on Sea Change (PRX/WWNO).

Since my head explodes when I'm only making audio docs - it's not a job, it's a 24/7 lifestyle ;-) - I also like being "employed" from time to time. As a coach, editor, sound designer, or mixer, for example.

At the beginning of my career, I gained quite a bit of experience making chatcasts. I created and hosted a lot of them, but for me, video (and social media campaigns) eventually killed the radio star. Still, I'm not too stubborn to say yes when a fun project comes along.

Right now, I'm a proud member of an ongoing children's book chatcast. It's serious business, I've found! But above all, it's been great to meet so many wonderful storytellers.

I'm the guy people reach out to when they have technical questions about mixing or want advice on what gear to use. I'm a bit of a gearhead, and I love mixing. I've spent quite a bit of time learning the craft, and I'm always happy to help others with it.

Since I'm also a music producer, people often tell me there's "music" in my documentaries. I guess they're right - I love rhythm, pacing, and finding the right emotional tone just as much as I love a good soundtrack.

Making audio documentaries can be a lonely job, and as psychologists say: people need people. I'm also endlessly fascinated by communities. Most of my documentaries are about them in one way or another, but I've also been lucky enough to be part of quite a few myself.

Twice a year I go on holiday with a huge, ever-changing group of friends. I share an office with 10 (!) fellow audio documentary makers (all wearing headphones), and together we call ourselves the Ruimte Collectief website coming soon. We talk about love lives, gossip, and story plots.

The biggest community I'm part of is called de Torteltuin. Together we're doing something slightly insane: we're building our own wooden housing complex. We're moving in in October '26! (Which is also why I might take a little longer to reply to your email…)
